Meet Christine

A family history of diabetes was the motivation for Christine, 37, to get fit and active.

Battling anxiety issues and weight management she was referred by her GP to join one of HealthWorks' get active programmes. Initially, Christine found the whole experience of visiting the gym daunting; in her mind everyone was fitter than her, leaner than her and, horror of all horrors, judging her. However, once she realised this wasn't the case and that all anyone around her was interested in was their own wellbeing, she started to enjoy the experience.

Seeing Christine’s new-found vigour and enthusiasm, a member of the HealthWorks team suggested she take part in an eight-week beginners’ weightlifting course. She hated it, wanting to quit after the first session! But spurred on by other members of the course, she stuck with it and now it’s something she cannot live without. She trains three times a week; it’s her passion as well as a healthy stress reliever. She is both physically and mentally stronger than she has ever been.

Her advice to anyone who thinks activity isn’t for them:
"Surround yourself with only those who want to see you grow. Keep it fun and you’ll find exercise a reward rather than a chore".

You can follow in Christine's weightlifting footsteps and book a place on our beginner's weightlifting taster session at
Lakeside Country Park as part of your free six This Girl Can Eastleigh activities.
