Meet Clare
Sat at home at a desk all day self-employed artist and illustrator Clare realised that she was in serious need of exercise – as well as some social interaction. So when her young son joined pre-school, freeing up some extra time and structure in her daily schedule, she had no real excuse not to get active.
Reluctant to take part in any activity requiring self-motivation such as gym work or swimming, Clare was looking for some form of team sport when she come across a flyer advertising Walking Netball. Although she hadn’t played netball since her days at school, the 46-year-old was intrigued by the idea of a walking team sport so she decided to give it a bash. It turned out to be just the thing she was looking for: a fun way to get fit.
A year on and Clare is bursting with newfound vigour – and has to be reminded by her teammates that she is not allowed to run in Walking Netball!
As well as the health benefits of taking part in regular activity such as feeling fitter, losing weight and getting toned, Clare says her confidence and wellbeing has soared. Her social calendar is a whirl too, with members of the Walking Netball club regularly meeting up for events, lunches and nights out.
Her advice to any women looking to get active:
"Don’t let self-consciousness stop you. Give things a go. There will be something out there to suit you. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain."
