New Year Boost

Better Health for 2026

New Year Boost is our annual programme to help residents in the Borough boost their health at the start of the year.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to know where to look or what is on offer, so this campaign provides a one-stop shop of different activities - showcasing the variety and quality of activity providers and venues in the local area.

January/February is a great time to kick-start healthy habits, so take a look at these local activities to see which might be the New Year boosting one you need. Some are free with others providing an entry discount.

This year, activities are split into four categories depending on your potential needs and starting point.

New Year Boost activities are aimed at Eastleigh resident adults (most from 16 years+, unless specified) who are currently doing little to no exercise.

Please wear appropriate clothing to your sessions and bring water to keep hydrated. Some activities have additional joining information and guidance.

Getting started

If you're looking for activities to help you get moving, whether it's with support or self-led.

This physical activity scheme (often initially 12 weeks) is designed to assist residents with an existing medical condition, or who lead an inactive lifestyle or are at risk of coronary heart disease. 

The first appointment is free, after which the use of leisure facilities incur a charge with a discounted rate for activities that fall under the scheme. Learn more about the scheme

Free organised walks led by a qualified Walk Leader. Walks take place every week throughout the year and across the Borough come rain or shine. Weekly timetable

Join free wellbeing walks around Lakeside or Itchen Valley Country Parks or in Netley, Bursledon and Hamble areas to meet people for a chat and spend time in nature. Check out the latest dates

The smoke cessation service for the Borough is SmokeFree Hampshire. They can help you whether you're a first time quitter, need help with withdrawal symptoms, or could do with regular contact to get you through. 

With support you're three times more likely to quit for good with Smokefree Hampshire.

Healthy changes start with little changes. Whether you want to lose weight, get active, quit smoking or drink less.

Better Health is here with lots of free tools (even self-led apps) for the small things to make a real difference.

There has never been a better time to kickstart your health. Let's do this!

Find your little big thing for your mental health. There are little things we can all do to lift our mood or ease our anxiety – we need to find what works for us.

This could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, prioritising our sleep or opening up to a friend. Our little thing, if we keep doing it, will make a big difference to how we feel.

Nyboost26 Womens Only

Women only and friendly activities

A special women’s only category highlighting the great activities available locally for women of all levels. 

Fair Oak Squash and Racketball offers sessions for ladies over 18 who wish to take up a new sport helping them to learn the basics of playing squash. Location

Sessions run every Tuesday from 13 January to 17 February, 6pm - 7pm

£28 for the six-week course (50% off normal cost).

Lakeside Weightlifting, based at Lakeside Country Park, brings ladies looking to gain strength - be they mothers or daughters, have physical and mental health challenges, or simply prefer female only spaces.

Learn barbell strength training, including squat / deadlift / press / snatch / clean and jerk - alongside assistance work with dumbbells and kettlebell. Join the novice friendly inclusive group who chat and lift together - we have ladies of all ages all together supporting each other.

Wednesdays and Fridays, 1pm - 2pm.

Aspire UMA Academy brings you Ladies self defence and empowerment from Pavilion in the Park. Take part in confidence-boosting martial arts and self defence training - become prepared, focused and strong. Location

5 January - 23 February, 7pm - 8pm.

Participants must book a free session in November / December (prior to the start date in January) in order to get the 8 weeks for a discount price of £58pp with a free training t-shirt.

The England Netball programmes Back to Netball and Walking Netball come with lots of hidden extras; building belonging, friendship, community and feeds bodies aching for adventure, helping you rebuild your you. It comes without demand or commitment, offering a warm welcome.

Kick-start

You're ready to get going, but your body isn't ready to go full throttle or needs something at a more leisurely pace.

MAN v FAT Football, with sessions at Stoneham Lane Football Complex, are for men O18 with a BMI of 27.5+. MAN v FAT Football is a network of football clubs for men who want to lose weight. Every player is in the same situation and wants the same thing: to lose weight, get healthier and enjoy football.

Fridays, 8.10pm - 10.30pm.

Register for £1.00, instead of the usual £9.99.
You may qualify for funding via Hampshire County Council for members registering with a Hampshire County Council postcode (excludes Portsmouth and Southampton residents). You'll be able to see if you're eligible before you make a payment to register. Should you not qualify for funding, the fee is £35.00 per month.

Eastleigh FC Walking Football for O18s with long-term or life-limiting conditions, with or without mobility aids. Strictly non contact. Location

New Community Table Tennis Club in Bishopstoke brings sessions for beginners (teenage children welcome when accompanied by an adult). You will be introduced to the basic strokes used in Table Tennis and enjoy games with other participants. Location

Sundays, 4.30pm - 6pm, from 11 January for six weeks. The first week is an introductory session, followed by a Beginners Course for a further five weeks.

Lakeside Weightlifting, based at Lakeside Country Park, brings you strength and mobility for O55s to learn to lift weights and reclaim mobility for health and longevity. Suitable for beginners and those with medical conditions or restrictions, as activities are all adaptive and at your own pace.

The sessions introduce and progress strength training and mobility work for older adults - perfect to reclaim and increase strength and confidence in body movements for life and fitness. We work with each person at their own pace and the group is supportive and fun. We introduce simple unweighted movements first and add weights and complexity as your skill and confidence improves.

Adult ballet at The Point Eastleigh, offers a friendly and welcoming ballet class for O18s. Suitable for those who dance regularly or are returning to ballet after a break. This is a mixed ability class and some ballet experience is advisable. Previous ballet training is not essential, but an understanding of turnout and knowledge of the five basic foot positions is required.
