Smokefree Poster Winners

Local schools of primary school age have joined the Council to reduce smoking by taking part in a Smokefree poster competition to deter park visitors from smoking or vaping around children’s play areas.

Pupils from Infant, Junior and Primary Schools across the Borough were invited to take part in the Smokefree Parks school poster competition and produced 230 designs. The winning designs will be turned into signs displayed at play areas in local parks.

The Saint James CoE Primary School were awarded winners in both KS1 and KS2 categories with £50 gift vouchers for the pupils and £500 vouchers for the school and the designs used to adorn play areas. Runners up also included Saint James, jointly with Hamble Primary and Scantabout Primary Schools, receiving £25 and £100 respectively.

It is a fun and creative way for children to get involved in protecting their health, and that of others, while learning about the dangers of smoking and vaping in a child-friendly way.

Thank you to the Parish and Town Councils who have given permission for the signs to be displayed.

The wider 18-month campaign is funded by Hampshire County Council and aims to support Smokefree Hampshire reach and engage together with other borough councils and partners across the county, also awarded with grants.

Smokefree Hampshire provides online support, a quitline phone service, self-referral for solo support, as well as general support and advice to give residents the best chance of quitting.

Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet Member Health, Cllr Tonia Craig, said: “A big well done to all the local school pupils who took part in the poster competition. The passion to support health in local residents and the creativity really shone through the designs. I do hope the poster signs will encourage a reduction in smoking in the area, making people to think twice and protect the health of young vulnerable users of the play areas.”
