Shop smartly to cut down on food waste over Christmas
If you can't use leftovers, use the council's weekly food waste collections
The time of year is rapidly approaching when families and friends will be getting together for Christmas and New Year Festivities.
Christmas in the UK generates significant food waste, with the festive period seeing an estimated 30-40% increase in food waste compared to other times of the year.
This includes millions of pounds worth of uneaten food, such as turkeys, mince pies, and Christmas puddings.
Try and plan meals and shopping and use leftovers if you can, there are lots of recipes online for leftover turkey etc.
If you have left over food that can’t be used, you can dispose of your Yuletide food waste in a green manner by using our weekly food waste collection service.
Food waste is recycled, once collected it is sent for anaerobic digestion creating a valuable bio-fertilizer and biogas that can be converted into electricity and heat.
We know not all food waste can be avoided, If you would like to order a food waste caddy and bin please visit our website (Brown Food Waste Bin | Eastleigh Borough Council)
