We take food waste seriously here in Eastleigh.
For Stop Food Waste Day, we’re reminding residents that reducing food waste isn’t just about what we throw away, it’s about valuing our resources, saving money, and protecting the environment.
Why recycle your food waste?
Across the UK, food waste remains a major environmental challenge. Did you know that around 60% of food waste comes from households, contributing to an estimated 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year? When food waste is sent to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and produces harmful methane emissions, which contribute to climate change.
By recycling your food waste instead, you’re helping to make a real difference. Through a process called anaerobic digestion, food waste is broken down in an oxygen-free environment to produce renewable energy and a valuable soil conditioner. This means yesterday’s leftovers can help power homes and improve agricultural land, turning waste into something genuinely useful.

Eastleigh has been proud to lead the way on food waste recycling since 2010, and the Borough continues to encourage residents to play their part in building a cleaner, greener future.
