Photographer appointed to first artist PhD residency at One Horton Heath
Eastleigh Borough Council, in partnership with the University of Southampton, has appointed Winchester-based photographer Simon Bray to undertake the first artist PhD studentship offered through the partnership.
The residency forms part of the Council’s public art programme for One Horton Heath and has been developed with the University of Southampton’s John Hansard Gallery and Winchester School of Art. Funded through section 106 developer contributions, and the University's Civic Agreement, the project places an artist in residence at the Council’s major new housing development, using creativity and research to support community building as the new neighbourhood takes shape.
Simon Bray is an established socially engaged photographer whose work has been exhibited nationally and featured by organisations including the BBC, The Guardian and the British Journal of Photography. His research at One Horton Heath will involve working directly with residents through photography workshops, exploring the evolving local environment and helping existing and new communities connect.
The partnership hopes to offer further artist PhD residencies at One Horton Heath over the coming years.
