Learn CPR and potentially save a life
Eastleigh Borough Council has joined forces with Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HAIOWAA) charity to urge people in the Borough to take up CPR training.
Last Tuesday, (May 6) dozens of council staff turned up at The Point in Eastleigh to be instructed on how they could potentially save a life.
Cardiac arrest is the leading reason for emergency callouts across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
When every second counts, the actions taken before emergency services arrive can mean the difference between life and death.
Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival — yet 49% of people say they wouldn’t feel confident delivering chest compressions or using a defibrillator.
The charity’s goal is to equip our communities with free, life-saving CPR and defibrillator training — particularly in areas where ambulance response times may be longer. With the right tools and knowledge, anyone can be the person who steps in to start CPR and save a life.
There are over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year. 80% happen at home.
Time is critical. When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest, CPR must begin within four minutes to give them the best chance of survival.
HAIOWAA supporter engagement officer, Lucy Butcher, said: “CPR and knowing how to use a defib is a skill that everyone should know how to do.
“To be that person who is next to someone in the street, or at the bus station, or a loved one, to be able start chest compressions within the first four minutes could double the chance of survival.
“As the number one call out for the Air Ambulance, bystander CPR is what can really make the difference before the emergency crews arrive.”
