Join the This Girl Can Eastleigh tribe
Women in Eastleigh Borough are once again being asked to get active and prove that This Girl Can.
The Borough Council is inviting women over the age of 16 to join the This Girl Can Eastleigh tribe for 2022. , Over the past six years the Sport England funded scheme has been instrumental, in encouraging women to become more active by challenging barriers and changing the way physical activity is presented.
The Eastleigh Borough relaunch, after a convention-busting campaign several years ago, is reaching out to women to improve their activity and fitness levels after the challenges of the pandemic. Research (by UK Active and This Girl Can July 2021) suggests that, while male activity levels at first fell more significantly, they recovered quicker, whereas female activity levels remained consistently lower than 12 months earlier.
The latest statistic for the Borough indicates that 20 percent of women in the Borough do less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week - and the Council’s Health & Wellbeing team aim to improve this over 2022.
The campaign starts with subsidised women-only New Year activities of the ever-popular Couch to 5k programme, Boogie Bounce, and a discounted gym membership at Wyvern Sport & Fitness Centre. In the spring and autumn, waves of activities for mums and over 50s will follow. Additional support comes from live Mind over Matter online workshops, available before each wave, which aim to introduce women to mindset techniques to help overcome barriers to become more active.
This Girl Can Eastleigh also includes a recruitment drive for women in the Borough to share their stories of getting active to inspire others. We would love to hear from anyone who has found their way to get active over the pandemic.
The Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Councillor Tonia Craig, said: “As a council, we are committed to supporting health and wellbeing post pandemic. This Girl Can Eastleigh proved a force in the Borough and women can get behind it once again together to address barriers to getting active. The message from the fun, motivating and informal approach of This Girl Can Eastleigh is that there’s no ‘right’ way to get active. However you jiggle, kick, lift, stretch, or sprint, it’s time to get moving in a way that suits you”.
