Eastleigh residents are being urged to get recycling in September as three major recycling initiatives are held this month.

From 1 September, two campaigns – Second Hand September -  which runs throughout the month - and Zero Waste Week – which runs between  1 September  and 5 September are launched.

Later in the month, Recycle Now’s flagship event, the annual Recycling Week 2025, takes place.

Second Hand September was launched by Oxfam in 2019 as part of its ongoing effort to promote sustainable fashion and reduce the environmental impact of clothing production.

Since its inception, the campaign has grown into a global movement, with thousands of participants joining each year to challenge the norms of fast fashion.

The campaign aims to shift consumer behavior towards more mindful shopping practices and to support second-hand markets as a key part of the solution to the fashion industry’s waste problem.

The campaign also supports circular fashion, which aims to extend the life of garments, reduce textile waste, and lessen the industry’s environmental footprint.

It invites participants to commit to not buying new clothing for the 30 days of the month. This is a time to explore thrift stores, online second-hand marketplaces,

First launched in 2008, Zero Waste Week is a global initiative encouraging individuals, households, schools, and businesses to make small changes that collectively have a big impact. From reducing food waste to rethinking packaging, the campaign is a reminder that every action counts.

Finally, Recycle Week 2025 will run from 22 to 28 September, so save the date in your diaries! Watch this space for more information coming soon.

Through WRAP’s (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) Recycling Tracker, we know that 88% of UK households regularly recycle. This is a testament to the focus and investment from WRAP’s citizen-facing brand Recycle Now and its partners over the years.

The campaign helps show that it’s easy to rescue aerosols, cleaning sprays and toilet roll tubes from the rubbish and recycle them instead.
