Information and advice for staying cool and safe during the hot weather

25 June 2026
Water Safety

Red Heat-Health Alert

A Red Heat-Health Alert is in place across Southern England until 11pm on Friday 26 June.

This is the highest level of alert and indicates a risk to everyone's health, not just vulnerable groups.

Stay safe in the heat:
💧 Drink plenty of water
🌳 Stay in the shade between 11am - 3pm
🧴 Wear sun cream, a hat and light clothing
🚗 Never leave children, vulnerable people or pets in parked cars
👥 Check in on friends, family and neighbours who may need support

Summer water safety

The weather might be warm, but water temperatures are still very cold. If you’re spending time on or near the water, make sure you know how to keep yourself and others safe.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, Float To Live:
• Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
• Stay calm and breathe normally
• Move your arms and legs to improve stability
• Don’t worry if your legs sink, we all float differently
• Once the shock has passed, shout for help or swim to safety

If you see someone else in the water:
• Phone 999 to get help
• Tell them to stay calm and float on their back
• Throw them rescue equipment to help them float until the emergency services arrive

Hot weather waste and recycling collections

Residents are being advised that waste and recycling collections will continue to start from 5.30am tomorrow and Saturday (26 and 27 June). Please put your bins out the night before, or by 5.30am on collection day.

This will help our crews work safely and avoid the hottest part of the day. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Let us know about a rough sleeper

With extremely high temperatures and severe weather warnings in place, we are increasing our support to ensure no one needs to sleep outside.

The Council's Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated and will remain in place while temperatures remain high.

Alternatively you can alert us by contacting the Housing Team on 023 8068 8165, by email to [email protected], or by visiting us at Eastleigh House, Upper Market Street between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

If you or someone you know is rough sleeping and our office is closed, please call our out of hours team on 023 8068 8000.
