Fleming Park underpass receives much-needed makeover
An Eastleigh underpass receives makeover with installation of a tiled mural.
An underpass in Eastleigh has received a much-needed makeover with the installation of a beautiful tiled mural designed by Hampshire-based illustrator Denise Hughes. Working from her studio at The Sorting Office in Eastleigh town centre, Denise created a design that features elements of the landscape and points of interest in the local community.
During the design process, Denise involved local children at several free workshops at the Velmore Community Centre. The workshops were open to children of all ages and focused on creating flowers, bees and butterflies, to be featured in the meadow section of the mural.
The underpass, which had previously been covered in graffiti, is a busy pedestrian and cycle route running under the M3 and linking Velmore to the Nightingale School, Aviary Estate and nearby Places Leisure Eastleigh health and fitness centre and park.
The project has been supported by Eastleigh Local Area Committee and First Wessex Housing Association.
Councillor Paul Bicknell, Chair of the Eastleigh Local Area Committee, said:
“We’re really pleased with the overhaul of the M3 underpass with its beautiful mural, Denise has done a fantastic job of creating a space that people can enjoy as they pass through.
The underpass connects the local community to schools and parks and has in the past been subject to a lot of graffiti, we hope this new mural will give local residents a sense of pride and keep this area clean and tidy.”
