Election registration – what residents need to know
With the announcement that a General Election is likely take place on Thursday 12 December 2019, Eastleigh Borough Council are keen to ensure residents are registered to vote - and to remove the confusion around the Household Enquiry Form and the Registration process.
During the past couple of months all properties have received a Household Enquiry Form to check that the current residents' details on the electoral register are correct.
Any new residents names added to this form will not automatically be added to the register. To register, they will need to go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or, for those who do not have internet access, complete a paper form called an Invitation to Register which can be obtained from the Electoral Registration Office at Eastleigh Borough Council. You’ll be asked for your National Insurance number (but you can still register if you do not have one).
It is important to remember that anyone whose name was already printed on the Household Enquiry Form when it arrived at their address will not need to re-register to vote for this election. Only those names that were are added to the Household Enquiry Form during this year’s canvass will need to register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
The deadline to register to vote for the General Election is 26 November 2019.
Allan Richard Ward, the Council’s Acting Returning Officer, who oversees elections in the Eastleigh Constituency, said: “It is important people know that residents will only be able to vote in the next General Election if they are on the current electoral register. If this is the first year that an individual's name has been added to a Household Enquiry Form, this doesn’t mean that they will be entitled to vote. They will have to complete an online registration on the Gov.UK website by the deadline to ensure they can vote. Residents who were already on the Household Enquiry Form will not need to re-register as they are already on the electoral register and will be able to vote."
Anyone who is unsure of their registration should contact the Elections Office at Eastleigh Borough Council on 023 8068 8000.
