The Mayor of Eastleigh. Cllr Janice Asman, is backing plans to set up a Community SpeedWatch team in Eastleigh’s town centre and Fair Oak after a visit to the volunteer group’s Chandler’s Ford team.

The group is also keen to recruit new volunteers to join their existing teams in Hedge End and Chandlers Ford.

The two existing teams recorded 700 speeding vehicles in the first six months of the year up to June 30.

Data collected by Commnunity SpeedWatch helps to ensure police camera vans are deployed where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury collisions.

Community Speed Watch is a scheme that enables members of the public to volunteer alongside Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary to monitor the speed of traffic passing through their area and identify vehicles which exceed the speed limit. Each scheme is run by the volunteers and trained and supported by their local Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Volunteers use equipment that can monitor the speed of passing traffic. The volunteers manually collect details at the roadside of speeding vehicles and pass this onto Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police.

Vehicle checks are undertaken by the police and entered onto a database. The registered keeper of the vehicle will then be sent an educational letter telling them that their vehicle was seen exceeding the speed limit and the impact their actions have on the local community.

If the same registration number is logged again within 18 months, the registered vehicle keeper will receive a warning that if the vehicle is seen a third time the details will be passed to an officer who may take further action.
