Hampshire Fire and Rescue think the blaze was caused by peroxide
It heated to over 100 degrees when compacted and ignited.
Eastleigh Borough Council is warning residents not to dispose of waste which could be a fire hazard after a fire broke out in a refuse lorry.
The fire broke out at around 8.15am at Horton Heath and took fire fighters three-quarters of an hour to make the load safe.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue believe the fire was caused by a peroxide hair dye product in the waste, which heated to over 100 degrees under compaction and ignited.
Fortunately, the fire was extinguished quickly and nobody was injured. The vehicle was returned to Hedge End Depot in Hedge End where it was tipped and the council is working with Hampshire County Council and Veolia to co-ordinate the disposal of the waste.
Eastleigh Borough Council has extended its thanks to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service for their help.
Residents are being advised that peroxide is a fire risk. A better option for peroxide disposal is treating it as hazardous waste and taking it to a Hazardous Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) with a hazardous waste container, which are as follows:
- Alton
- Andover
- Basingstoke
- Bordon
- Farnborough
- Marchwood
- Netley
- Segensworth
- Winchester
- Southampton
- Portsmouth
