Eastleigh Borough youth provision is enhanced over the summer
There is an enhanced youth service offer for Eastleigh Borough’s young people this summer holiday.
Eastleigh Borough Council partners with Youth Options to provide youth centre sessions and street-based outreach projects in and around their Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford and Fair Oak venues - and across the Bursledon, Hamble and Hound areas. July marked the first anniversary of the partnership commissioned by the Council to provide youth services with 1,435 young people supported.
Alongside the regular evening youth nights at Energy Youth Centre, YZone Fair Oak and Fryern Pavilion Youth Options runs additional daytime sessions at Energy Youth Centre over July and August. Youth Options will also be working with young people in the Bursledon, Hamble and Hound area to deliver a summer project, with activities developed in partnership with the area's younger residents. Both activities are open to young people aged ten to 19 years (or up to 25 for tailored 1:1 support).
The youth centre sessions provide a mixture of structured activities, with sessions ranging from ‘positive relationships’ to ‘understanding the risks of vaping’, as well as providing a hangout for friends to play games and chat to youth support workers.
The street-based outreach projects work with the Council, police, and businesses to identify areas for targeted work. They run informal sports sessions and games in local parks and make themselves available to chat to young people for signposting, support and advice.
The Council’s Cabinet Lead for Health, Councillor Tonia Craig, said: “Supporting young people, especially during post-Covid years, is key to the future of the Borough. We are proud of our partnership with Youth Options and the important work they do to positively bring young people together and provide targeted support to those who most need it.”
Madeleine Durie, CEO of Youth Options said: ‘’We were really pleased to be able to start youth work in these parts of Eastleigh. Building on an already established youth work in other parts of the Borough – including Bursledon, Hamble and Hound – it has been great to add to that so t children and young people can have somewhere to go and hang out with friends, as well as get support from our fantastic team of youth workers.”
