Eastleigh Borough Council is very sad to share the news that Councillor Cynthia Garton passed away on Saturday 2 May.

Councillor Garton was first elected as an Eastleigh Borough Councillor for Hedge End South in 2010, having served as a Hedge End Town Councillor since 1999. She was Mayoress of Eastleigh in 2008-9 and was Mayor in 2021-22.

Councillor Garton contributed to a wide range of Council committees and was Chair of the Hedge End, West End and Botley Local Area Committee from 2018. In 2021 she expertly chaired the marathon virtual Council meeting to consider the planning application for the runway extension to Southampton Airport, which ran for a record 22 hours across two days.

Paying tribute, Borough Council Leader, Councillor Keith House, said: “Cynthia was a deeply cherished member of the community, who always brought diligence, balance and integrity to her responsibilities. She will be remembered for her kindness, warmth and humanity and will be greatly missed.”

The thoughts and condolences of the Eastleigh Borough Council community are with Cynthia’s husband, Derek and her other family and friends at this very sad time.
