Council supports food waste week
Eastleigh Borough Council is supporting national Food Waste action week from 18-24 March to help residents recycle food waste in their homes.
The Council is encouraging more households to recycle their food in their food waste bins that are collected every week from the kerbside rather than put it in their black bin.
As part of food waste week our recycling team will holding two roadshows at:
B&M, Hedge End on Tuesday 19 March 10-1pm and
Waitrose, Chandlers Ford on Wednesday 20 March 10-1pm
(We will also be holding a roadshow at Sainsburys/M&S at Hedge End on 3 April).
We will be providing help and advice on recycling food together with FREE compostable bags to help encourage people to recycle their food waste.
Collecting food waste from households for recycling can benefit residents by removing food waste from their black bins creating more space. It is recycled into soil improver and generates renewable energy in the form of biogas.
4.7 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away each year by UK households. Around 25% of this wasted food is as a result of people cooking, preparing or serving too much - this costs UK households £4.9 billion each year.
