Council appeals for witnesses for vandalism to statue

04 November 2024

The Council are appealing for witnesses who may have seen an act of vandalism to the giant Remembrance poppies that had been erected on Eastleigh bandstand to commemorate Remembrance 2024 and Armistice day.

The incident took place over the weekend of Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November at the bandstand in Leigh Road, Eastleigh.

A Council spokesperson said  “This is a mindless and hugely disrespectful act of vandalism and a great shame for the local community, the Royal British Legion and everyone involved in Remembrance and Armistice 2024.  The giant poppies have now been removed.

The giant poppies were first installed in 2020 as a way of showing our support and respect for Remembrance in a year when we were unable to get together for a Remembrance service due to Covid. Since then the poppies have been installed every year as a mark of respect.

Any information regarding this act of vandalism can be passed to Eastleigh Borough Council by contacting 023 8068 8000 or the Police on 101.
