Recycling pilot

Learn more about the recycling pilot running from November 2020

Eastleigh Borough Council is trialing a new way of collecting recycling that will see residents in pilot areas receive fortnightly glass collections and food waste recycling becoming available to people living in flats for the first time.

The Council is looking to change the way it collects waste to make it easier for residents as well as making it more reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly. To do this, it is carrying out a pilot which will take place from 9 November 2020 to 29 January 2021. If successful, it will continue beyond this date and be rolled out across the Borough.

The pilot only affects specific roads and flat blocks (detailed below). All properties taking part in the pilot will receive a letter through their door providing more information.

Fortnightly glass recycling

People living in houses within the pilot areas will have their black glass and battery recycling box collected every fortnight on the same day as their green recycling bin collection. We hope this will make it easier for residents to remember when to put glass out and make glass boxes lighter to carry.

For some, this will mean a change to their regular glass collection day.

Food waste returning

Food waste, which was paused during the coronavirus lockdown, will be restarted for every house in the Borough, including those within the pilot areas, on 9 November. Residents within the pilot areas will receive one roll of compostable caddy liners to help them kick start food waste recycling.

Food waste for flats

For the first time, people living in some flat blocks (detailed below) will also be able to recycle their food waste. Residents will receive a kitchen caddy and a roll of liners, so they have everything they need to start turning their food waste into clean energy.

A new bin with a brown base and lid will be delivered to communal bin stores. It will have a flap which you’ll lift in order to empty the caddy contents. This will help to prevent flies and contain odours. There will be a large compostable liner in the food bin to keep it clean. Communal bins will be emptied once a week and the liner replaced.

Roads within the pilot

* Not all properties on this road are included in the pilot. If your property is  included in the pilot, you will receive a letter through the door before the pilot begins. In some circumstance, this might mean you are putting your bin out for collection on a different day from a neighbour.
