Graffiti

There were 121 reported cases of graffiti in the borough during 2014/2015.

Criminal Damage Act 1971:- If you are caught graffiti writing, you may be prosecuted under this Act.

If the value of criminal damage exceeds £5,000 the maximum penalty for those aged 18 or over is 10 years imprisonment. For those aged 12-17 years the maximum custodial penalty is a detention and training order of up to 24 months. Where the damage is less than £5,000 the maximum sentence is three months' imprisonment or a fine of £2,500 for adult offenders.

We aim to clear graffiti off all council structures within the following timescales :-

  • Offensive : within 1 working day
  • Non-offensive : within 5 working days

Vandalism

The Council has a responsibility to repair damage or vandalism to publicly owned land or buildings, for example,  public conveniences, pavilions, public litter / dog waste bins.
