Over a thousand local youngsters and adults enjoyed this year's programme of summer activities and fun with hundreds of sport and activity sessions held throughout the summer across 28 locations in the borough.
This year’s Park Sport celebrated its thirteenth anniversary and provided five Skate Jams throughout the borough which saw over 520 young people attend together with over 3500 free swimming bookings for under 16 years olds and over 3600 bookings across 13 different other sports and activities. The popular schemes are organised by Eastleigh Borough Council and supported local housing association VIVID (formerly First Wessex). Additional sponsorship from the Lawn Tennis Association meant more children could access tennis this summer, with an increase of 140 tennis bookings compared to 2016.
The Summer of Sport and new Family Sport initiatives also provided hundreds of adults and families with the chance to enjoy a range of activities across the borough. Bookings are now flooding in for a range of beginner courses that start in September so they can continue to enjoy their chosen activity at a local club after the summer.
Some of the comments from pleased parents included;
“I think Park Sports is an amazing opportunity for children to try something new without feeling they have to commit to a course. It is excellent value, great fun, and a way of keeping active during the summer. I would recommend it to everyone with children.”
“Fantastic programme, great to be able to try a different sport without a high cost or expectation on ability. Please keep it running.”
“Excellent way to get the children out of the house and trying new things. THANK YOU.”
And adults enjoying Summer of Sport commented;
“Absolutely loved my experiences! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to try out such a diverse range of activities.”
“I have loved this year's Summer of Sport and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to try things I might never have accessed otherwise. The friendliness and expertise of the people hosting the sessions has been fantastic. I definitely want to continue with badminton. Thank you Eastleigh BC!”
And Family Sport participants said;
“Great idea to put on activities that families can do together as usually the kids have separate interests. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would be very interested in doing more like it.”
“We attended Family Sport (cycling) and had so much fun and learned so much in 2 hours. My daughter is new to riding her bike and during this course she learned how to set off within 5 minutes! I also realised it was the first time we were able to cycle together."
Carol Williams, Operations Director at VIVID said “VIVID’s committed to creating bright futures, so it’s great to see that so many local young people have enjoyed a wide range of exciting sports and activities this summer. As well as the obvious benefits to health and wellbeing, it’s also given them an opportunity to try out something new that they might not otherwise get a chance to try.”
Cabinet Lead for Wellbeing Cllr Alan Broadhurst said, ‘We are delighted to have provided such a wide range of activities for local youngsters and adults to enjoy. Park Sport, summer of sport and Family Sport allows young people and adults across the Borough to access quality activity sessions and helps to keep them active and improve their health.“
