Council encourages local people to have their say on M27 Southampton Junctions Scheme

Local people are being encouraged to have their say about the proposed M27 Junctions Scheme.

Highways England, in partnership with Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council, are consulting on the proposed scheme to improve the route into Southampton from the M27 at junction 8 via Windhover Roundabout and the A3024 corridor (Northam Road-Bitterne Road West-Bursledon Road).

The proposed scheme – known as M27 Southampton Junctions – seeks to address current issues and constraints along the corridor to reduce congestion on local roads particularly at pinch points, improve journey times and support more journeys by bus, walking and cycling.

This will help reduce congestion on local roads and on the M27 itself between junctions 5 and 8. If these improvements are not made traffic congestion and queuing will worsen if this is not addressed on the local network, there will be wider impacts on planned housing and employment growth and poor air quality will persist.

In line with the Government’s 2015-2020 Road Investment Strategy, Highways England is working with Hampshire County Council and Southampton City Council on the scheme.

They are focusing their proposals for this route on five main sections. These are: Northam Road Rail Bridge, Bitterne Rail Bridge, the A3024 corridor (Northam Road-Bitterne Road West-Bursledon Road), Windhover roundabout and M27 junction 8.

They are carrying out a public consultation to obtain your feedback on the proposed scheme which will run for 6 weeks from 19 September 2017 to 31 October 2017. Find out more at one of the Public Information Exhibitions taking place on:
