Little Owls Woodland Pre-School is run by Eastleigh Borough Council’s Countryside Service and has been judged as ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ for the personal development, behaviour and welfare of the children in their first Ofsted inspection.
Based in the outdoor setting of Itchen Valley Country Park, the pre-school opened in January 2015 and has grown quickly over the last year.
Cabinet Lead for Leisure Cllr Alan Broadhurst said, “This is fantastic news as the staff have worked extremely hard to create a stimulating and nurturing environment for children and have been praised by Ofsted for blending outdoor learning practices seamlessly with the Early Years Foundation Stage.”
Little Owls Woodland Pre-school follows the Forest School ethos with children having access to an indoor area; however, they prefer to be outdoors in the fenced woodland whatever the weather. In their report Ofsted recognised that ‘Children really relish opportunities to independently explore and investigate the natural surroundings of the pre-school and that 'children develop confidence and they show a strong determination to learn and develop a wide range of skills.'
Ofsted also acknowledged that ‘parents speak very highly about the pre-school and particularly enthuse about the confidence their children have gained.’ They also noted that 'children benefit from a team of enthusiastic, highly qualified staff that are very attentive to the children’s emotional well-being, and form close relationships with them.'
Parents are encouraged to provide feedback and comments to help improve the service. There is a good community ethos within the pre-school and children from Little Owls will be taking part in West End Carnival.
