Garden Waste collections

Disrupted by freeze

Did you know that when temperatures fall below zero garden waste can freeze in your bin? The Council’s garden waste collection is currently being affected by frozen garden waste in some bins.  Garden waste contains a lot of moisture which may freeze and become stuck in the bin, preventing emptying. Due to the cold weather and garden waste being frozen we have today been unable to collect from a number of roads. Advice for residents is to leave your garden waste bins out and we anticipated all outstanding bins will be collected on Friday 2 December.

If your garden waste is not collected by 2pm you can report this by calling 023 8068 8000.

You can help by:

  • loosening the materials inside the bin before presenting it for collection.
  • not overfilling or over packing your bin - this compacts the garden waste particularly the materials at the bottom of the bin. The more compact it is, the more likely it is to freeze.
  • keeping the lids closed to reduce moisture build up. If you are able to keep the garden bin in a garage or shed, this can also help prevent the waste freezing.
