Lakeside Centre - work begins

Mayor of Eastleigh Cllr Jane Welsh visited Lakeside Country Park to see the start of the construction of the new Eastleigh Lakeside community buildings by the Construction Partnership, who are based in Hamble.

The Council’s Eastleigh Local Area Committee approved plans to replace the existing buildings with a new watersports and storage building, which includes new changing facilities, offices and a multi-use room developed on the site - enabling improved use of the lakes by the local community, voluntary groups and the education sector. The multi-use room will also include a kitchen area and serving hatch to provide an opportunity to use the facilities in this great location. Three offices will also be provided that could be used by local organisations or businesses, together with new office facilities for Council staff.

Chair of Eastleigh Local Area Committee, Cllr Paul Bicknell, said: “Now that the old buildings have been demolished it’s great to see construction work getting underway. This is a really exciting project to modernise the facilities for the community and to help attract more visitors to this wonderful waterside facility.”

Construction Partnership’s Contracts Manager Darren Hancock, commented: "We are proud to be awarded this contract. It is an incredibly exciting project to be involved with. This project complements our extensive experience in high quality sustainable buildings and similar community schemes.”

The popular Lakeside facility is currently used by a range of local groups and organisations for canoeing, kayaking, open water swimming and other activities including fishing, model boating and dog training with around 10,000 users and 700 sessions on the water last year.

Use of the lakes and the country park will continue throughout the build as temporary showers and other facilities have been provided.

Residents are reminded however that this is a construction site and that care and attention must be taken when visiting the park.
