Cancer Physical Activity Scheme

HealthWorks and Macmillan run a Cancer Physical Activity Scheme for those that have had a diagnosis of cancer and are either undergoing or completed treatment.

The scheme is joint funded by Macmillan and Eastleigh Borough Council.

All of our HealthWorks instructors hold a Nationally Recognised Level 4 Qualification in Cancer Rehabilitation which provides them with the knowledge and understanding to guide individuals with cancer to a healthier lifestyle through physical activity intervention and behaviour change.

Being active during and after treatment can help manage some of the side effects of cancer treatment, such as:

  •  Reducing cancer related fatigue
  •  Reducing stress and anxiety
  •  Improving low mood or depression
  •  Improving bone health and helping prevent osteoporosis
  •  Improving heart health
  •  Building muscle strength
  •  Helping maintain a healthy weight

What does the scheme involve?

You will have an initial appointment with a member of the HealthWorks team, where you will be provided with more information. As part of this, you will be required to complete a questionnaire about your health and physical activity levels. The outcome will help your instructor to work with you to set achievable goals. HealthWorks will  work with you to identify an activity that you would like to try e.g. a gym programme, aqua classes, healthwalks or a home exercise plan.

You will be offered follow-up appointments 3, 6, 9 and 12 months from your initial appointment. You will also have access to regular support throughout your time on the scheme.

How much does it cost?

Your initial consultation and follow up appointments are free of charge. However there is a cost for the use of the facilities/activities, but many are offered at a discounted rate for individuals on the scheme.

How do I access the Cancer Physical Activity Scheme?

You can be referred into the scheme via your health care professional or you can self refer.
