The High Wood Barn visitor centre
Our visitor centre was built in 1990 in the style of a 17th Century Hampshire Aisle Barn. It is constructed using the traditional methods of that period, from timber brought down on the Beaulieu estate during the 1987 storms. Please note that our visitor centre and shop are currently closed for refurbishment over the Easter period.
Watch this space updates! You can also keep up-to-date on the building works on the Itchen Valley Country Park Facebook page.
During the refurbishment works, our Woodland Café will be operating from the Kingfisher Room (behind the main barn). We hope to provide all the usual fare through the Easter holidays, practicalities permitting.
Woodland Café opening times
We are open daily (until Sunday 30 September) from 10am to 5pm.
Please note that we will be closed on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 April.
We are home to the adrenalin fuelled, award-winning tree top adventure Go Ape!
Tucked away in our beautiful woodland with the River Itchen running through its heart, the Itchen Valley Go Ape! boasts some of the highest platforms and quickest zip wires in the south. Take to the trees, speed down zip slides, tackle rope bridges, Tarzan swings and crossings; all set high above the forest floor.
Play areas for children and families
We have two fun play areas for children, one perfect for under nine year old’s situated by our Visitor Centre and an adventure style play area for ages 14 years and under located on High Hill Field.
An interactive trail connects the two play areas. Made up of a series of animal sculptures designed by local sculptor Andy Frost for children to play on, the play trail is also suitable for pushchairs.
Educational visits and woodland parties
Our educational visits are perfect for early years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
We also offer exciting and fun birthday parties in our woodland for children and their grown-ups.
There are a variety of self-led trails that you can take at your pace, including the Ollie Owl Trail, a brass-rubbing trail, an orienteering course a Nature Detectives trail and our two mile Totem Trail. You can buy a trail guide from our visitor centre for 60p or download your trail guide here.

We have two permanent orienteering courses for the more adventurous to try. The short course is 1.3km in length and takes around 30 minutes to complete, whilst the long course is 3.5km in length and takes around an hour and 20 minutes.
Each course is designed so that you don't need a compass, although if you have one, why not try out your skills! Orienteering packs with full instructions are available to purchase from our Woodland café for £1.
