Councils, including Eastleigh, have been asked by the government to allow construction companies to extend the hours they operate during weekdays and on Saturdays. The move follows the coronavirus lockdown which saw work grind to a halt on building sites across the country.
Most development sites are currently restricted to working from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.
Under the new guidelines most construction sites will now be able to operate until 9pm from Monday to Saturday, but not on Sundays or Bank Holidays. In non-residential areas operating hours could be longer – potentially up to 24 hours a day.
Building firms can now make minor changes to their hours without seeking formal permission from the Council. If they want to make a major extension to their operating hours, they need to get the go-ahead from the Council, who must give them a decision within ten days. Councils will need to demonstrate very strong reasons for refusing any request.
The new arrangements are short-term and should not extend beyond May 2021.
