Kettle and Cake
Hedge End café Kettle and Cake began life a few years ago as a caravan serving at shows and similar before it moved into a corner premises in the village. Run by Helen and Pat and their son Jake, it offers a range of fresh homemade treats each day. During lockdown, its takeaways were well supported and proved very popular – on Mother’s Day alone there were 150 orders. It’s currently offering three socially distanced sittings a day from Monday to Saturday.
Jake said: “There was incredible local support for us during lockdown and it has been difficult to squeeze people in since we have reopened - we’re offering sittings at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. I’d say booking is essential, especially as the scones are made to order. Hedge End is a tight knit community and we love seeing our regulars and lots of first timers too. There’s a nice mix of locals and people who come from all around and we’ve had visitors from Canada and Cyprus.
“The business was always my mum’s dream and everyone loved her baking right from the start. She still makes all of the cakes except the speciality coeliac and vegan cakes, which are made locally. The brownies sell out every day and the cheese scones are very popular too!”
