Funding to study how best to manage volunteers during a major emergency has been won by Eastleigh Borough Council's Safety & Resilience Manager, Melvin Hartley, who has been awarded a prestigious Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship for 2019.
Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellows receive funding to travel overseas and research cutting-edge solutions to important topical issues facing UK society.
Melvin is one of only 150 Fellows selected from almost 1,800 applicants. They include people from all walks of life, researching topics across a broad range of sectors, from the emergency services to nursing, science to education.
Melvin said: "I will be travelling to the United States, Germany and the Netherlands to explore how best to manage spontaneous volunteers who turn up at emergencies and disasters and how subsequently to permanently recruit them into volunteering."
