Eastleigh Borough Council’s Itchen Valley Country Park has been selected to receive a Tesco Bags of Help award which will be used to create a new family activity trail within its stunning parkland.
The country park, located in Allington Lane, Eastleigh, will receive a minimum of £1,000 towards the project but it could be more depending on how the public votes in participating Tesco stores.
Specifically designed to encourage families to spend time together in the great outdoors, the new activity trail will use wooden finger posts at points along the path to guide families in woodland activities such as den building, tower construction, natural picture creation and more. These finger posts will be found all around the park and the trail is free to follow. A map of the activity locations will be found online.
How much funding Itchen Valley Country Park gets to create the family activity trail depends on the public as it will now go forward, with two other successful projects in Hampshire, to a vote in Tesco stores. Customers will decide the amount each project will receive by voting for their favourite one each time they shop. The project with the highest number of votes across the region will receive £4,000, the second £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000.
Eastleigh Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health Tonia Craig said:
"We are delighted that Itchen Valley Country Park has been selected out of thousands of applications to receive a Tesco Bags of Help award.
“The trail will be a wonderful addition to the park as we know being outside helps physical and mental wellbeing. In these times when it is difficult to spend quality time with the family, we hope the trail will encourage bonding as well as physical wellbeing through walking and taking part in shared activities.”
Voting for the project takes place in selected Tesco stores from
Tuesday, 1 January to Thursday, 28 February 2019.
Tesco Bags of Help is run in association with Groundwork and offers community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 390 regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the five pence charge levied on single-use carrier bags.
