Are you Renting?
For many people who want to live in Eastleigh the easiest short term solution is to rent privately. There are many landlords operating in Eastleigh, owning from just one house to many.
Your duties as a tenant
As a tenant you have both rights and responsibilities. These are to be found in your tenancy agreement. The most important responsibilities are to pay the rent and to look after the property. More advice on this is to be found on our 'Managing your tenancy' page. If you are struggling to pay the rent it is important that you act promptly. Rent arrears can grow very quickly and if you have unpaid debts it will affect your chances of obtaining loans and a permanent place to live in the future. We can give you 'Help to pay the Rent'.
Your Landlord's Responsibilities
Your landlord also has responsibilities, too. These are to offer and maintain your home to a reasonable standard and in houses in multiple occupation there are additional duties, mainly to reduce the risk of fire. Our pages on improvement and repairs and dampness and mould growth help to explain what the duties are.
Most landlords are responsible and provide a much needed service, but rogue landlords still exist. It is a criminal act to harass or illegally evict a tenant and the Council only wants to work with responsible landlords. Our page on harassment and illegal eviction explains what to do if you are in dispute with your landlord.
