What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is a new type of benefit designed to support people who are on a low income or out of work. If you qualify, you will receive a single monthly payment into a bank account chosen by you. 

Universal Credit replaces these six existing benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit

Please note that Universal Credit does not include help to pay your Council Tax. Information on Council Tax Support and how to apply can be found here
