A showcase for sustainability, well-being and Eastleigh innovation

Highlighting cutting edge ideas, as well as health and sustainabilty best practice

The Eastleigh Business Conference, which took place in June 2018, was a showcase for innovation, as well as a chance to learn about best practice in running a sustainable company and promoting the health and well-being of employees.

A Green Borough

Eastleigh truly is a Green Borough. Our per capita water consumption is 100 litres per day compared with 130l/day for Hampshire and 141l/day for the UK.  Even ultra-green Germany is behind Eastleigh at 121l/d.  We also have the lowest incidence of food waste in Hampshire.

These encouraging statistics were provided by Sam Underwood of Southern Water who joined speakers from the Swan Centre and Bluestar buses on the Green Borough panel at the Conference.

Bluestar’s growing fleet of Euro 6 buses is reducing emissions and helping keep the Borough’s air cleaner. Meanwhile, the Swan Centre’s Dan Kitchen showed that environmental friendliness can be lucrative with 50% cost savings achieved from a recent revamp of the centre’s recycling and waste management schemes. 

Healthy Businesses

Our businesses are also keeping their staff healthy: CooperVision, Ageas and goPhysio all described the challenges of recruitment in this area of over-employment - and the consequent importance of keeping employees fit and motivated.  The alternative is a stark landscape of sickness absence that is 2.5 times more expensive than the comparable payroll.  The Council’s HealthWorks team was on hand in the exhibition area to remind attendees of the many schemes available to help keep staff and residents fit: Body MOTs, Park Sport and NHS health checks among others.

Showcasing Eastleigh innovators

The conference breakout area was populated by local exhibitors from Splash Maps, a wearable map business that recycles PET bottles for its fabric; game makers Arokah and Quirk, 3D modeller Cadical and designer makers from the Sorting Office creative hub.

Around 65 delegates enjoyed the cool of the auditorium for the panel sessions, moderated by Lee Peck of Lee Peck Media before emerging into the evening sunshine for drinks and canapes served on fully recyclable sugar cane plates manufactured by KCC Packaging
