Tables and chairs consent

Information and applying to have tables and chairs on the pavement outside cafes and restaurants

On 22nd July 2020, the Business and Planning Act 2020 introduced a nationwide ‘Pavement Licensing’ scheme which came into immediate effect.

This new Pavement Licence makes it much quicker and cost effective for businesses such as cafes, restaurants and bars to place furniture on the highway on a temporary basis and enable them to operate safely while social distancing measures remain in place. It will also help provide much needed income over the summer months to protect as many hospitality jobs as possible.

There are now two ways in which to apply for permission to put tables and chairs out on the highway.

Pavement Licence (Business and Planning Act 2020)

  • Decision made within 14 days
  • If granted, valid until 30 September 2021
  • £100 fee deferred for 3 months
  • Conditions apply.
