Animal Licensing

The licensing of activities involving animals

On 1 October 2018 The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals)(England) Regulations 2018 came into force. These regulations replace a number of pieces of existing legislation.

Those undertaking the following activities will need to be licensed under the new regulations:

  • Selling animals as pets
  • Providing or arranging for the provision of boarding for cats or dogs
  • Hiring out horses
  • Breeding dogs
  • Keeping or training animals for exhibition

The new regulations set conditions throughout England that must be complied with.  A star rating must be given and this will depend on compliance history and the standards reached.
