Climate Change
What is climate change?
If you would like to know more about climate change
The Council has made a commitment to be carbon
neutral
in its own main operations by 2012, and is making good progress
towards this goal. We are achieving this by reducing as much
as possible the energy used in our own operations, and thereafter
compensating for the remainder by contributing to the CarbonFREE fund.
In 2009 the Fund was responsible for the insulation over over
190 homes of Eastleigh residents, resulting in a saving of
approximately 4,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide over 40 years

Eastleigh Borough Council has signed up to the 10:10
Campaign

Eastleigh Council was one of the first organisations to sign up
to the 10:10 campaign. Becoming a 10:10 organization means
making a commitment to pull out all the stops and try to reduce our
carbon footprint by 10% in just one year. And, less
than 24 hours into their historic coalition, the
Conservatives and Liberal Democrats joined up and
committed to cut central government's emissions by 10% over the
next 12 months
Carbon footprints can be measured in different ways, but for
10:10 purposes, we’re talking about four key areas:
- electricity
- on-site fuel use (gas, for most of us)
- road transport
- air travel
These are the four areas we will be reporting our progress on to
the 10:10 campaign at the end of the year.
The Campaign is also open to individuals and businesses.
Why not consider signing up if you have not done so? More
than 70,000 people including Sienna Miller, Nick Stern, Delia
Smith, Sara Cox, Vivienne Westwood and Colin Firth have already,
and more than 2,500 businesses including Sony, Microsoft, O2,
Addidas and Tottenham Hotspur FC. To find out more, or sign
up, go to the 10:10 website.

Eastleigh Council was proud to be named a 'Beacon
Council for Tackling Climate Change' for the year March
2008 to July 2009. The award was based on the work that the
Council has done over many years, and throughout the Council's
operations.
As part of our Climate
Change Strategy and Action Plan the Council is undertaking a
large range of measures designed to promote action to both mitigate
and adapt to the unavoidable consequences of climate
change.
How do I know how much carbon dioxide I am
emitting?
You can find out how much
carbon dioxide is emitted from various activities from lots of
different sources.
- The Government’s
Act on CO2 carbon calculator - is useful because it can give
you a personal action plan that will show you how to cut down on
your carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It will also show you
what carbon dioxide you emit through typical travel patterns and in
the use of your home and household appliances.
- The
Resurgence Carbon Calculator website - offers the
opportunity to work out how much carbon dioxide results
from various activities in your life using an on screen
calculator. The figures could also be put into a
spreadsheet.
- The Carbon Account - An
online community of people that wish to work together to reduce
their energy use and carbon emissions. It offers the facility
for groups or communities to set up their own version and share
tips with friends.
What can I do?
If you would like to find out what you can do to reduce your own
impact on the climate by cutting your carbon dioxide emissions by
10% or more, visit our pages on Home Energy
Saving, Sustainable Transport, or Recycling, or contact the
Energy Saving
Trust. The Centre for Alternative
Technology also maintain a very useful Information webpage including
information about home renewable energy, transport, water
and and money saving tips.

energy use, meet with others, and have fun

Using Green Electricity
Another way to reduce your impact on the climate if you are
unable to reduce your home electricity use any further is to choose
to buy from a supplier that purchases from renewable sources.
The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has just
published a new labelling scheme for 'green' electricity tariffs,
called the "Green Energy Scheme"
If you would like to know more about how you can purchase your
electricity from renewable sources, and what this means, you
may wish to use this guide to switch. For more
information about generating heat or electricity in your home,
please visit our Home Energy Saving page covering Renewable
Energy.

the Council is doing in the community !
