Recycling Banks
and Charities
There are many different ways to recycle and some can benefit
charities in the UK. Please visit the Recycle Now website to find a list
of the nearest recycling banks to you,
You can recycle the following at various banks across the
borough:
- Christmas
Trees
- Books
- Cans
- CD's
- Glass bottles and jars
- Clothes and Textiles
- Paper

Aluminium Foil
Aluminium foil can be taken to four recycling sites across the
borough:
- Hedge End Park recycling zone (Sainsburys
/ Marks & Spencers)
- Mortimer Road car park, Botley
- Tesco, Bursledon
- ASDA, Bournemouth Road, Chandlers
Ford
The foil is collected by our StreetScene team and taken to the QE2
activity centre for people of all ages with learning disabilities,
autism, physical disabilities and other specific needs. Here the
foil is sorted and packed into bricks by volunteers. The foil is
then sold with the money going back into the charity so they can
continue their fantastic work.
Christmas Trees
Over 6 million trees are bought each christmas and most are
thrown away creating 9000 tonnes of additonal rubbish.
To help reduce this, we have set up sites across the
borough where you can take your old tree to be recycled:
The drop off dates are: 5th – 15th January

Computer Equipment
We all know that when you buy a computer, within 12
months it can be out of date so why not donate
your old computer to charity?
Jamie's Computers is a charitable organisation that provides
training and employment opportunities to socially excluded adults
in Southampton, through business enterprise. They accept
redundant computers from local businesses and homes,
which they refurbish and make available for re-use.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
Charity
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity was launched
in 2004.
On 1st July 2007, the Air Ambulance became operational and is now
flying several missions every day - many are life saving.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity relies
entirely on voluntary donations, and for this vital service to
succeed, it needs to raise more than £92,000 every month: that's
over £3,000 every day.
None of us know when we may need its help. Airborne within three
minutes of a 999 call, the Air Ambulance can reach most of its
operational area within fifteen minutes. It needs an area only half
the size of a tennis court to be able to land.
Textile
banks are a great way to support the Air Ambulance through
recycling your unwanted shoes, clothes and household textiles. This
scheme is currently raising £5000 per week in sustainable funds for
this vital service.
Good quality garments are sorted, repacked and
resold in the UK and Worldwide. Items that cannot be resold are
recycled into industrial wipers and cloths, insulation, new fibres
and such like. All garments are recycled in one way or another.
Recycling enables the aircraft to stay operational, at the same
time helping the environment. Many tonnes of unwanted goods have
been diverted away from landfill and incineration in the area.
You can also raise money by recycling your old mobile phones and
iPods. Recycling a mobile phone/ iPod couldn't be easier. Visit
http://www.bagitup.org.uk/
to request a Freepost envelope or to download the Freepost label
for you to attach to an envelope.
Please recycle to save lives and keep using the bright yellow
Air Ambulance bins throughout Hampshire. For details of your
nearest bank location please use the bank locator link- http://bagitup.org.uk/banklocator/.
