Smells and Odours
The cause of odours is sometimes easy to determine and sometimes
very difficult. The Council is generally unable to deal with
odours of a domestic nature, such as cooking smells, because the
legislation excludes domestic odour from the definition of a
statutory nuisance; however it can deal with these if they
are produced on commercial premises. The Council can
investigate and take action to prevent most smells from commercial
activities and in the case of some domestic odours, such as those
from bonfires, compost heaps and drains, we can often address the
problem and simultaneously prevent odours from occurring.
The Borough periodically experiences odour problems over a wider
area, such as those caused by agricultural or commercial activities
and these also can be investigated and hopefully
minimised.
