Demolition and Construction Site Noise
Construction and Demolition works are usually noisy and
often take place in residential areas unused to such noise.
Although the work may not last long, the disturbance caused may
lead to problems for people who live and work near the site.
The Council has powers to control noise and other nuisance from
building sites caused by contractors and sub-contractors.
This can be achieved by either Environmental Health legal powers
or, in some cases, Planning Enforcement.
Planning permission granted for re-development work often carry
requirements that the work be restricted to certain hours, and that
the developer put measures in place to control noise from the
work. there is further information on the Development Control web pages
about considerate construction.
If you are concerned that your activities may be noisy, we would
advise that you contact us to discuss how to manage the
noise.
Where activities such as piling, night working, large
redevelopments consisting of several new dwellings or more, or
where work on site will last for some time, developers are advised
to assess noise impacts by following the approach given in
BS5228:2009 'Code of Practice for noise and vibration control on
construction and open sites'.
If you are suffering excessive noise from a construction or
demolition site you should contact us.
