Fair Oak
Landfill Study
Progress Update 28/6/12
The report of the study findings and a leaflet outlining
these findings have been published today.
All residential properties in the study area have been contacted
to advise them that the assessment work completed so far shows
that, in line with government guidance for the large majority of
properties in the study area, no further work is necessary because
risks are considered to be within accepted levels.
Since 1988, the Council has been monitoring for landfill gas in and
around the Fair Oak area. The Council has reviewed the current
landfill gas sampling and now intends to extend the sampling
area.
The area of the study, and choice of
monitoring locations has been based on advice received from
independent consultants and has taken into account the distribution
of the old sandpits, local geology and the results from previous
monitoring that has been undertaken.
As stated above the assessment work completed so far
shows that in line with government guidance for the large majority
of properties in the study area, that no further work is necessary
because risks are considered to be within accepted levels
Because of the complex nature of the sites and issues
we have been studying there are a very small number of properties
where we have not been able to conclude our assessment of risk at
this time. However, as we have robust results for the majority of
properties we have now published the report.
When the additional work has been completed we will
make those results available in the same way, we expect that this
will be toward the end of 2012.
There are also two leaflets from the Health
Protection Agency, HPA, about landfill sites and landfill gas and
potential health effects of exposure to landfill gas.
