Dog Collar and Tag

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires dogs to wear a collar and tag when in public.   The name and address of the owner or keeper must be inscribed.  Failure to wear a correctly inscribed collar and/or tag carries a maximum penalty of £5,000. Any dog without a tag can be seized and treated as a stray.  Stray dogs may be reclaimed by the owner on payment of all fees incurred.

If your dog escapes or gets lost, even if it is not wearing a tag,  contact the Animal Welfare Officers.  They will inform you if they are holding a dog matching your dog's description.  They will also advise you on further action to take.

Microchips and Tattoos
This is a permanent form of identification although it is not required by law and dogs must still wear an inscribed collar and tag when in public   All veterinary surgeries and Local Authorities have scanners.

The Council offer dog tags at reduced  prices.  Contact the Animal Welfare Officers for a form.
