Council urges local residents to have their say on ‘quarry’
proposals
Eastleigh Borough Council is urging local residents and
businesses to have their say on a proposed ‘quarry’ at Hamble
Airfield following a decision by Hampshire County Council to permit
plans for gravel extraction on the site. Plans to designate
the site for gravel extraction were approved by Hampshire County
Council as part of their county-wide Waste and Minerals Plan at a
special public council meeting on 13th October 2011.
Around 50 local residents and businesses attended the meeting
and made deputations against the plans. Hampshire County Council
will now hold a six week consultation period for local people to
have their say on the plans, that will run through to December.
Eastleigh Borough Council together with Hamble-le-Rice,
Bursledon and Hound Parish Councils, local businesses and residents
including STAGE (STeering group Against Gravel Extraction) are all
opposed to Hampshire County Council’s proposal to quarry gravel
from Hamble Airfield. Some of the key concerns that the
proposals will raise in the area include traffic congestion and
pollution on Hamble Lane, noise, pollution for nearby homes and two
schools, together with damage to the local ecology and economy of
the area.
Council Leader Keith House said ““We are devastated by the
decision from the County Council. Eastleigh Borough Council has
consistently opposed these proposals which will blight one of the
prettiest, but already most congested, parts of the borough. I
would urge all concerned local people to ‘have their say’ during
the public consultation period. We must make clear that the
plan fails its basic test of being fit for purpose”.
