Elections and Electoral Registration

Don't Lose Your Vote

You can only vote in elections if your name is on the electoral register. On the 1st December each year, a register must be published using information from the annual audit of all households undertaken during September, October and November. Under new regulations the register is also updated on a monthly basis from December to August . This allows anyone who has moved into or within the Borough to update their registration details.

Elections are normally held on the first Thursday in May and European Parliamentary elections are held every five years in June, the next one being held in June 2014.

Moved home? Coming up to 18? Just not on the Register?

All you have to do is fill in a voter registration form .  You have to sign your own form; someone else cannot do it for you.

When you send us your form we will add you to our list of new applications. Any elector can then object to your name being added to the register. If this happens we will write to you.

If your application is not objected to, we will change your details within 2 to 6 weeks of receiving your form. We will write to tell you when your application is allowed.

The form gives each resident the opportunity to be omitted from the EDITED VERSION of the electoral register. The EDITED  REGISTER can be sold to people or companies who request it.  The FULL VERSION of the electoral register is used for election purposes, for the prevention and detection of crime and proof of residency for credit purposes.

Please remember information you have supplied for Council Tax cannot be transferred to the Electoral Register.

When will my name be added to the Electoral Register?

Rolling Registration is undertaken monthly, following a specific timetable that is set out in legislation. The table below shows when your name will be added to the Electoral Register.
