Disability Sport

Although Eastleigh lead the way with disabilty sport opportunities we always strive to do better. EDLAG has been recognised as best practice ensuring good communication with all parties involved in disability sport in Eastleigh.

Eastleigh Disability Leisure Access Group (EDLAG)

EDLAG aims to
  • Foster and promote all sports at all levels, providing opportunities for recreation and competition, for all people with physical, learning or sensory difficulties within the Borough of Eastleigh.
  • The group will be working in conjunction with Borough based centres to enable residents to access sporting activities, both in and out of the centres.
  • Help bring down barriers that prevent people with disability participating in sport including better access to and awareness of leisure facilities, specific marketing and transport, leisure facility staff disability awareness new leisure activities and inclusion into mainstream leisure activities.
 
 

What is happening?

EDLAG includes many members from a variety of settings in Eastleigh. If you are interested in joining the group please contact Janine Pickering (Chair) janine.pickering@eastleigh.gov.uk or Peter Hull (President) peter.hull@hants.gov.uk

In 2003 a successful application to Sport England's 'Awards For All' resulted in the group being awarded £5000. This money was used to help fund Disability Awareness Training for local staff, a promotional video identifying activities available to people with disabilities, hire of facilities, transport and quality coaching for various events.

In 2008 EDLAG were succesfully rewarded with a further £9,400 from Sport England's 'Awards For All' which enabled the group to provide an extensive programme for adults with disabilities living in or around the Borough of Eastleigh.

We support an extensive range of sporting and leisure opportunities for people of all ages with learning, physical and sensory disabilities. To add to this list or for more information please contact janine.pickering@eastleigh.gov.uk

  • Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a programme that supports the fitness industry to become more inclusive, catering for the needs of disabled and non-disabled people alike. www.inclusivefitness.org 
  • Parasport has been designed to inspire, educate, inform and signpost disabled people, and those interested in disability sport, to high quality opportunities.  They aim to help you find your personal best. www.parasport.org.uk/
  • Awards For All provides lottery funding to small local groups.  It aims to involve people in local community activities. The grant is ongoing so there are no deadlines.  For more information visit:  www.awardsforall.org.uk
  • HI-VIS is the Hampshire and IOW Visually Impaired Services Sports Club. The club meet at 3.15 on Fridays at Toynbee school but are looking to start in other areas in Hampshire.  www.hi-vis.org.uk
