Energy Youth Centre
79 Leigh Road, Eastleigh
SO50 9DQ
023 8064 2943
The new centre offers a large flexible space. As well as
having the large hall which is ideal for bigger dance nights, there
are smaller rooms which can be used for one to one sessions or
small group work. One of the most popular features already is
the recording studio which will be staffed by students from
Southampton University. This a is great facility for young
people and something that was specifically
requested.
The centre offers open access evenings on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays evenings. In addition there
will be range of other activities and services delivered at the
centre.
The Council has contributed a substantial £480,000 for the
centre and the Youth Opportunities Fund administered by Hampshire
County Council has contributed £200,000. Young people were
helped by youth workers to apply for this funding and for funding
for the recording studio.
The funding cuts announced by the County will
not threaten the future of the centre which is key priority for the
Council. Hampshire County Council and Eastleigh Borough
Council will work together and will be involved in the future
management of the project.
This youth centre is one of 5 youth centres
that the Council has invested in across the Borough.

The Young People
The youth centre will serve young
people living in or near to Eastleigh town centre. Young
people in the area have wanted a youth centre for many years in the
town centre. Before the centre opened there was no focal point for
young people where they can access services and also socialise with
each other. The young people in Eastleigh have varied interest and
needs and the centre offers a flexible space for them. With the
support of the youth workers the young people have been involved in
the designing the centre including choosing their own colour
schemes for the rooms.
The Centre
The building
has been a landmark in Eastleigh town for over 100 years. It
has been a roller skate rink, a drill hall and a ballroom and will
hold memories for many residents. The refurbishment of the
centre has ensured the building remains part of the life of town
whilst meeting an important need. The building project has
been extensive to get the building up to good standard and has
included a new roof, new windows and making additional rooms.
The Facilities
The
centre offers a considerable amount of space for young
people. As well as having the large hall which is ideal for
bigger dance nights, there are smaller rooms which can be used for
one to one sessions or small group work. There is also an
activity room with a washable floor which can be used for craft
activities. One of the most popular features already is the
recording studio which will be staffed by students from Southampton
University. This is a great facility for young people and
something that was specifically requested.
The Partnership
The
centre has been developed through a partnership between Eastleigh
Borough Council and Hampshire County Council. The Borough
Council has provided capital funding of £480,000 and the County
Council has provided funding of £240,000.
Thank you
The Project
Team would like to thank the young people who have taken part in
the project and watched the centre develop. We would also
like to thank people from a huge range of organisations who have
supported the project
