Fleming Park Leisure
Centre, Eastleigh
'Go Green' by Somino
Ltd
Joshua Rose, Ryan Orme
(2008)
2007 saw the installation of a
Combined Heat and Power Unit and related District Heating Scheme at
Fleming Park Leisure Centre. The system provides heat and
electricity for the leisure centre and also heats the nearby Civic
Offices via a heat main. The installation of the system is part of
a scheme to promote renewable and sustainable energy technologies
throughout Eastleigh Borough. Eastleigh Borough Council
commissioned the artist collective Somino Ltd to produce a piece of
wall art to adorn the brick structure that houses the Combined Heat
and Power Unit. The brief required them to engage with young
people; involving them in the development of the artwork to
increase their sense of ownership over the final piece.

The final design was influenced by
work produced by young people at a graffiti workshop. The artists
steered the young peoples’ ideas in a direction fitting for both
subject matter and location. The art piece fuses a series of
logo like designs, e.g. light bulb, and recycle arrows, with
narrative scenes depicting the relationship between man and
nature. Various underlying patterns and shapes tie the
designs together.
“This approach of combining elements
of painting, design, and drawing is the key to the way we work; it
gives the work vibrancy and appeals to a wide audience” -
Ryan Orme 2008
