Twyford Road Improvements
- This consultation closed on 5th March
2012
Twyford Road is the main corridor of access to the town centre
from the north, and as part of a joint initiative with the County
Council, design work was carried out to improve access in the area
and carry out environmental improvements using funding from recent
developers contributions.
The proposals are intended to bring benefits for all users of
the road and in particular pedestrians, in accordance with the
Eastleigh Town Access Plan.
Following public consultation in March 2011 on options to be
considered for improvements to Twyford Road, the scheme options
listed below were identified as priorities and feasibility design
has been progressed.
- Scheme 1 : Drawing 001 for location. New
controlled (Puffin) pedestrian crossing on Twyford Road in the
vicinity of Mill Street.
- Scheme 2 : Drawing 002 for feasibility
design. Improve pedestrian crossing on Shakespeare Road and
widened footway build out with possible planting.
- Scheme 3 : Drawing 003 for feasibility
design. New uncontrolled pedestrian crossing on Twyford Road in
the vicinity of the St Johns rd junction and Environmental
improvements to footways and the Premier shop forecourt area.
- Scheme 4 : Drawing 004 for feasibility
design . rationalisation and environmental improvements at
junction of St Catherines Road including pedestrian crossing
improvements.
- Scheme 5 : Drawing 005 for feasibility design.
Pedestrian crossing improvements at both Alexandra square junctions
and local build out outside no 133 Twyford Road, with possible tree
planting.
- Scheme 6 : Drawing 006 for feasibility design.
Pedestrian crossing improvements at Albert Road junction and renew
existing bus shelter south of junction.
- Scheme 7 : Drawing 001 for location . Lamp
column upgrades south of the railway bridge up to the LIDL
roundabout, to accommodate advertising banners or similar
artwork.
Parking Issues :
It was
clear from the original consultation that residents had concerns
over commuter/town centre visitor parking. There were numerous
requests for a residents parking scheme. The measures described
above concentrate on the crossing and the environmental
improvements aspects that can be realistically delivered in the
short term with the resources available.
The issue of on street parking will continue
to be monitored and a possible future residents parking scheme be
considered alongside additional environmental enhancements in
Twyford Road.
Public Art Input
As part of these works, a
number of small scale environmental improvements are planned to
enhance the pedestrian routes into Eastleigh town centre. It
is proposed that an artist is commissioned to develop a public art
trail and we would like residents to be involved.
It would seem fitting on this site to pay tribute to one of
Eastleigh’s female role models, the Victorian novelist, Charlotte
Mary Yonge. In 1863 Charlotte donated £500 towards the parish
church (Church of the Resurrection) and was asked to choose the
parish’s name. She chose Eastley, but decided that it should be
spelt ‘Eastleigh’ as she perceived this to be more modern.
Scheme Progress :
The
scheme options will require further detailed design and need to be
fully costed. This may highlight additional changes to the
proposals and may result in certain schemes or elements of them not
being progressed to implementation.
Detailed design will be progressed in the
early part of 2012 and firm design proposals and programme of
delivery will be confirmed. Implementation of particular schemes is
hoped to start later in 2012.
