Designated Public Places Order

The Council has been asked to consider making the centre of Eastleigh a place where there are special controls on drinking alcohol in public. In order to establish this area the Council is proposing to make a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) – under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001.

Special controls

If the Council decides to make the centre of Eastleigh a place where there are special controls on drinking alcohol in public, a police officer, police community support officer or accredited community safety officer would have the right to tell someone to stop drinking in that area. They could also take away their drink. Someone who refused to comply could be arrested and fined.

The controls can only be introduced in an area where nuisance or annoyance to the public or disorder has been linked to people drinking in public.

The Council asked local people and businesses what they thought of this idea.
